Workflow

Our tools aim to take your document to a finished, quality audio product via the most seamless workflow for the task.

Drop in your manuscript.

Import a .docx, .epub, .pdf or pasted text. Narrative Studio splits it into chapters, then into individual sentences. Split and join sentences to segments to build segments you are comfortable recording in a single take.

Hook up your characters.

Add speakers, or let Narrative Studio detect them from dialogue tags (beta). Every character can be assigned colour, aliases and director's notes, and all dialogue is shown in its character's selected colour down its left edge so you don't lose track of who's speaking.

Separate the speech.

One click splits each line at the quote marks to keep dialogue and narration independent. Add drama to your characters, and add effects specifically to dialogue while keeping narration standard.

Record at your own pace.

Arm a line, speak your line, then check your take before moving on. For the more confident recordist, enable 'rolling record' tools to move faster through your manuscript. Every take is processed in 32-bit float and saved to disk instantly as a lossless 24-bit WAV master, with a click-to-nav chapter waveform to help you track what's been completed to spec.

Tune your dialogue.

Give any spoken line custom/preset vocal effects for scenes that benefit from them. Or go further: speech-to-speech voice changing re-voices your performance as another character entirely (beta), keeping every beat of your performance while narration stays exactly as you recorded it.

Keep every take standardised to ACX compliance.

Loudness, peaks and noise floor are measured against the Audiobook Creation Exchange band as you go, and offending segments light up right on the waveform to help you grease the right wheels in your next take. Clips that came close but didn't quite make the cut get a one-click repair, so only irreparable audio requires re-recording.

Externally edit stubborn takes.

Some might require your preferred audio editing app. Click external fix, make your changes, hit save, and it lands straight back on the same line as a fresh take, with the original kept safe. Currently supported: Adobe Audition, Audacity, REAPER.

Compile the master.

Sequence every take on the timeline, check loudness against the ACX band, and export a lossless WAV master or MP3/M4B for final delivery. Add music or sound effects for plays or other media. Or simply download every line separately for projects like video games. Grab the SRT for perfectly timed word/sentence placement for subtitling, educational tools, or organisation of dialogue in game development.
